The PGHS Varsity and Junior Varsity girls soccer teams continue on their disparate paths through the newly-realigned Region 4.On Thursday, the visiting Varsity Vikings got out to a slow start and were hammered by the homestanding Beetdiggers 5-1. The Varsity Vikings now have an overall record of 5-3 and a Region 4 record of 1-3.
By contrast, the Junior Varsity side had a much different outcome with an intriguing storyline along the way.
Coach Jose Marzan opted to start all the sophomore players even though many freshmen had been starting thus far in the season. It appears Coach Marzan was looking to motivate the sophomores to take more of a leadership role on the JV team. The effectiveness of that tactic was not immediately evident as the home team jumped to an early 1-0 lead before the Vikings could knot things up at 1-1 before halftime. In the second half, with the freshmen restored to their usual positions, the Vikings reeled off two more goals for a final result of 3-1. The JV season record stands at 7-1, and 3-1 in region play.
Pleasant Grove is now exactly half-way through their season schedule, but have yet to play powerhouse Alta (5-0, 3-0) and cross-town rival Lone Peak (5-3, 2-2). PG will get their shot at Alta next week. The Vikings received favorable scheduling this year and have an entire week to prepare for the Hawks. Will a week be enough to put an effective game plan together against the three-time defending state champions? Can the JV continue their winning ways? Tune in to find out!
