On Wednesday, in what was expected to be a stiff test for the girls in gold, Team Spirit played last year's tournament champion, Blue Crush, and beat them handily, 5-1.
Yesterday, Team Spirit played the champion of the regular season, Dominators, who finished last season 18-2 or something like that (while Team Spirit, as noted below, finished an inauspicious 6-6-8).
For this fourth game of the season, the question on everyone's mind was whether Team Spirit could continue its winning ways. The first three wins seemed almost too easy. Was Team Spirit really that good? Was it just a case of last year's best teams having a down year? How would Team Spirit respond when a game was tight?
Yesterday's game either provided no answers to those questions or answered them loud and clear as Team Spirit picked up right where they left off on Wednesday and blew out the Dominators 12-1. Six different girls scored--two scored three goals each. In the first four games of the season, Team Spirit has outscored their opponents 38-2.
It's almost a little embarrassing to be a parent witnessing the carnage. It's not like the girls are picking on tiny, timid, inexperienced teams. Team Spirit's opponents are almost always taller and stronger. Our girls are just good.
Madison had another very good game. She had several assists on goals and took a number of shots from an impressive distance that just barely missed the mark. One of the mothers (whose daughter is top scorer in the league) said to me, "Is your daughter number 10? I just love watching her play. She is so good at reading the field. She is always in the right place and she plays so effortlessly." I have to agree. She is so fun to watch because she hustles and rarely makes a mistake. Maybe I'll try to post some video footage in the future.
