Region 4 competition opened on Tuesday with the Pleasant Grove Vikings facing the Hillcrest Huskies at Viking Stadium. Each had a preseason record of 4-0. It was the Huskies, however, who remained undefeated. Hillcrest entered the game looking to make a statement in the newly realigned Region 4 and did so with physical play. The aggressive Huskies appeared to impose their will on the Vikings, racing out to a 3-0 halftime lead. The Vikings regrouped for a better second half, but the damage had been done and Hillcrest held on for a 3-0 victory over Pleasant Grove. The JV Vikings fared better than their Varsity counterparts and turned the tables on the guests from Hillcrest with their own 3-0 halftime lead. The Vikings continued their dominance in the second half, but seemed to wither under persistent pressure from the Huskies which resulted in two goals in the final 8 minutes of play. It was not enough, however, to affect the final outcome and the JV Vikings came away with a 3-2 decision. Taylor Kirk had two goals and Sammy Dahl had one.
Next up for the Vikings (4-1, 0-1) is a trip Thursday to American Fork (3-1, 0-1) to face the Cavemen. This is a must-win match for the Vikings if they hope to remain in the top half of the region standings.
