Deep Thoughts
I just read Confessions Of An Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire. It is the story of Cinderella from the prospective of Cinderella's stepsister. It was pretty good, set in Harlem, Netherlands so I had to read it. But it brought up an interesting point about beauty. It asked the question many times, what is the point of beauty? From the book, "Beauty is no end in itself, but if it makes our lives less miserable so that we might be more kind--well, then, let's have beauty, painted on our porcelain, hanging on our walls, ringing through our stories. We are a sorry tribe of beasts. We need all the help we can get." What's your take on beauty? Does is have a point? Discuss.

I think beauty is a good chillie-cheese dog and a good make out seesion...(Dr. Giles)
dr. giles - you need help!
Hey! That was NOT me. Look at the spelling for Pete's sake! Jason?!
Deep Thoughts, indeed. The point of beauty, eh?
For me, personally, I would say beauty definitely has a point. Even though I might not be able to define beauty, I know it when I see it (or hear it--does beauty register with the other senses? Is there such a thing as a beautiful smell?). I find I like beauty in my life because it soothes me--it gives me a sense of well-being and peace. Perhaps it is somehow related to the Spirit?
It seems we have an imposter amoung us. Now you all know I have the power to discover who each person is who writes a comment, so maybe someone should save g-dawg's name from the mud. Moving on . . .
Beauty is a gift, I think. I think g-dawg is correct in thinking that beauty can register other senses; how about sound. I know I hear beautiful things all the time. Plus, a person can feel beautiful things. Like softness. I feel that beauty is a gift and beauty can be found in all things. How's that for deep?
I enjoyed reading all of your responses. When I was in my teens I used to see alot of ugly people and babies...As I reached my 40s &50s there seemed to be less ugly people & babies...Now I'm in my 60s and very rarely see an ugly anything....hummmm could beauty be in the eye of the beholder..as we become more pure, refined, so do our senses of smell, sight, hearing, feeling, God is the beholder-est of all so how much He must enjoy!!?? AND it is our challenge to raise above to slugh it off like "mud ball on a glass door" or better yet not let it influence us-the truly ugly of evil and sin..hows that for deep? anyone want to comment?
Well done grasshoppers. Because of your thoughtful answers, you may have a chance for another book discussion later. For me, beauty is an end. In itself it has a purpose, to remind us of goodness. Weather it be music or art or smell or words, beauty enlightens and reminds us that there is something more. Something more to us, something more to life, something more than this meager existence. And with a sweeping bow, I take my leave.
Jen, that was fun..all you kids have learned from me....because I don't express myself very well or deep, you all have gone looking for more education and have found it....you all have expressed yourselves VERY well indeed...you bless my life.....love and hugs
I didn't put one in for "Dr.Giles," it takes me 45 minutes to donwload my pictures. I don't have the time to figure out how to write "anonymously".
Now, let me take a swing at this one.. Beauty...um...well...it's like this........can I pass and try the next discussion? You are all so much more intune to your surroundings then I. Maybe more mature...no that couldn't be it. And with triping and falling, I take my leave.
